Left to weather
Some owners let the oak silver naturally. The door then needs little more than an occasional check of the joints and ironmongery.

Solid oak front doors, frames and sidelights made around your entrance. The grain, colour and weight of the timber become part of the house.

From stone cottages to new builds, the design changes with the house. The material stays honest.

Curved heads made to follow a brick or stone arch exactly, with the frame and sidelights shaped to match.

The door can be designed with the porch or canopy around it, so the whole entrance reads as one piece of joinery.

Glazed and panelled oak doors for inside the house, made to the same standard as the front door.
Oak garden doors. Glazed oak French and garden doors can be made to match the front entrance.
Oak moves with the seasons, so how a door is built matters as much as how it looks. Stiles, rails and boards are jointed so the timber can live outside without twisting or opening up, and the frame is made alongside the door so the two are fitted to each other before they leave the workshop.

Size, sidelights or overlights, arched heads, glazing, ironmongery and the oak itself.
Oak sits well with black iron, brass, bronze or satin steel. The choice depends on the colour the oak will become and the character you want at the door.
Locks and security hardware we have specified for front doors.
Hand-forged ironmongery in traditional forms and considered finishes. An option for period entrances.
Architectural door furniture, including handles, letter plates and complementary fittings.

Vision panels, sidelights and overlights are set into the oak with matching beads, in clear or obscured glass to balance privacy and light.

Vertical boarding within a solid frame gives an oak door its weight and rhythm. Board widths are set out to suit the size of the door.

The frame, sill and any porch or canopy can be made in oak too, so the whole entrance weathers and mellows together.
Oak is chosen for its strength, its weight and the way it ages. Left to weather, it slowly turns silver. Oiled or finished, it deepens to a warmer colour. Either way, it is meant to be seen.
Some owners let the oak silver naturally. The door then needs little more than an occasional check of the joints and ironmongery.
A clear finish keeps the colour warmer and more even. It needs renewing from time to time, depending on how exposed the entrance is.
Boards are chosen and arranged so the figure and colour read well across the whole door, rather than falling at random.
A photograph of the existing entrance. An oak door you walked past. A sketch of the porch you would like. Tell us about the house and what caught your eye, and we will work through the timber, glazing and detail with you.

Foxthorne is deliberately small. Every door commission is worked on by the two of us, from the first drawings through to making and fitting.
Andy brings around four decades of joinery experience. That depth of knowledge informs the way we work: how a joint is resolved, how timber is selected, how something should be proportioned and when a detail simply is not good enough.
Keeping the making between us means those decisions stay close to the work.
made by handA considered service should feel discreet from first visit to final fit.
No signwritten vans. Your project does not need to advertise itself to the street.
No photographs or details of the work are published without your approval.
As much of the door and frame as practical is made, checked and prepared in the workshop before we arrive.
Careful fitting. Dust managed wherever practical. Your home left clean and tidy.
“Exceptional quality. Andy communicated with us very well throughout, sharing designs so we could agree upfront what we wanted, and kept us well informed of timescales.”
“Andy advised us on the best materials and the different options in style. The job is now completed and we are very happy with the result.”
“Our Victorian house has walls over an inch off true. Quite a challenge. The result is really excellent. He’s hugely skilled, talented, hard working and reliable.”
“All is still very well with the table, with the colour of the oak table top having matured beautifully.”

Photographs of the opening, the walls around it and the direction it faces tell us how much weather the oak will see and what the door needs to do. Rough sizes help, but we measure properly before anything is drawn.
Boarded or panelled, glazed or solid, left to weather or finished. The door, frame and any sidelights are drawn together so the proportions work as one entrance.
The door and frame are made in our workshop near Honiton and fitted by the two of us. The same hands that selected the oak hang the door.
Oak is a natural material, and small surface checks and seasonal movement are part of its character. Careful selection and the right construction keep that movement within what the door is designed to accept.
Both work. Weathered oak turns a soft silver grey. A finished door keeps more of its warmth but needs the finish renewing from time to time. We will talk through what suits the house and how much upkeep you want.
Yes. Sidelights, overlights and vision panels are designed with the door, so the glass and timber proportions work together.
The frame is always made with the door. An oak porch or canopy can be discussed as part of the same commission.
Foxthorne is based near Honiton in Devon and undertakes suitable bespoke joinery commissions across the South West and Thames Valley.
Our bespoke front doors start from £3,000. Oak doors with sidelights, arched heads or a porch cost more, depending on size, glazing, ironmongery and fitting.
